A little about
DJ Charlie Villas

DJ, music curator and merchant of good times, Sydney-based DJ Charlie Villas will curate your dream soundtrack to make your event pop!

“THANK YOU SO MUCH for bringing the music to our wine, you nailed it!”

– Kristen Francis – Wine Island Festival Director

DJ Charlie Villas’ obsession with music and DJing began in the mid 90s when she was handed her very first funk vinyl by a friend. This gesture spawned a disco and soul record collecting frenzy until eventually she’d saved up enough pennies for a pair of decks and started rocking house parties. Before long Charlie was presenting her own radio show called ‘Soulicious’ on Bondi FM and writing album reviews and pop culture articles for Oyster Magazine and former hip hop publications; UBM and Request Magazines. This opened the doors to DJing at many of Sydney’s well-known hot spots over the years including (the former) Good God Small Club, Cake Wines, Freda’s, Ivy pool, Newtown Hotel, Imperial Hotel, Miss Peaches, The Bearded Tit and The Cricketer’s Hotel (she holds a monthly residency at The Bearded Tit – named ‘Time Out Sydney’s 2016 Best Neighbourhood Bar’).

A regular presence at Sydney’s festival events, bars and a much loved personality at queer parties, Charlie has expressed her versatility by playing slots at Sydney Festival Village, Sydney Festival Wrap Party, Sydney Film Festival Hub, Mardi Gras Film Festival, Synergy Percussion’s ‘Taboo’ at the Australian Museum, MCA’s ‘Art Bar’, El Loco at the House, Heaps Gay, Pineapple Republic and Spirit of Soul Festival. In 2016 and 2017, she was the resident DJ at Wine Island, Australia’s most tropical wine festival held on Sydney harbour. On the international front, she was invited to play sets in 2016 at The Glory, London (one of London’s legendary queer pubs) and at Le Comptoir Général, Paris, a music and cultural space dedicated to exoticism and one of Paris’ prime spots for fashion and music events. And in 2006 she had her own weekly event at (the former) Madame Fling Flong in Newtown, Cha Cha’s Salon, a night devoted to reggae, afro beat and latin rhythms.

Charlie’s public persona is strengthened by cutting her teeth working with some of Australia’s most influential music businesses. This includes many years as Music Director at SBA Music, producing tailored music playlists for corporate clients. Her music consulting and programming talent led to a role with Universal Music Publishing in the sync team, working alongside advertising agencies and music supervisors for Film & TV. The experience has driven her passion for all kinds of music genres and with a deep love of soul music in various forms, her sets are a journey through soul, disco, boogie, R&B, latin, reggae, dancehall, new wave, global rhythms through to re-edits of classics.
