A Royal Hoopla

Charlie was invited by The National Portrait Gallery in Canberra in 2022, to curate the performers and help shape an after-party event coinciding with their Shakespeare to Winehouse exhibition, icons from the National Portrait Gallery, London. ‘A Royal Hoopla’ featured a cross-interstate pollination of Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne’s best performers including Tanzer, Glittoris, Jazida, Rosie Rivette, Sharon Manhattan and of course, Charlie on the decks. Inspired by the icons from the exhibition (ranging from Queen Elizabeth, Anna Wintour, Kate Moss through to David Bowie) and held on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, it was a dazzling night of burlesque, performance, music and dancing delivered with the energy of royalty meets punk glam.

Club Sandwich

Club Sandwich is an event collaboration between HipHopHoe, one of Melbourne’s finest music selectors and Charlie, to celebrate femme queens, non-binary and BIPOC performing talent. They’ve hosted events across Eora and Naarm, even across the two cities during the first lockdown in 2020. Joined by the one and only eco-sexual love goddess, Betty Grumble, think of it as your new favourite queer strip club.

Charlie Villas is one of Sydney’s favourite party starters and most in-demand DJs. A vibe maker and dance floor legend. A master of combining styles in unexpected ways. Think disco and Prince, Paradise Garage and music from legendary New York clubs, Glitterbox with 80s boogie, global heaters and memories from the best house party you’ve ever been to. This is the spirit of Charlie Villas. Charlie is a staple at the best parties. Internationally, she has played sets at The Glory in London, at Paris’ favourite late-night venue Le Comptoir Général and in Tokyo in the city’s legendary women’s only bar - Goldfinger. At home in Australia, she can regularly be seen behind the decks at Heaps Gay, Poof Doof and Honcho Disko. In 2022, she will be appearing at Summer Camp Festival, Australia’s first touring Pride festival alongside Years & Years, Big Freedia, Ladyhawke and more! Her life-long obsession for music sparked in her teens collecting disco and soul vinyl. Her deep knowledge and love of music from all around the world has seen her work as a music consultant for film and television working at Universal Music Publishing and for retail and hospitality giants at SBA Music, and curating soundtracks for luxury brands like Gucci and Louis Vuitton as well as Adidas, Aesop, Google, Mighty Nice, Salesforce, Screen Australia and Uniqlo.

Sound Design & Music Direction

Gary Bigeni / AAFW 2022

Charlie was invited by fashion designer and Sydney’s favourite colourful personality Gary Bigeni and long-time AAFW music director/collaborator, Stereogamous to collaborate on the music for Gary’s return (after a six year hiatus) to Australian Fashion Week. Featuring a new collection of hand painted and tie dyed clothing, the show featured Gary’s signature colourful patterns and glittery fabrics with a gorgeous, diverse cast of models. Jonny of Stereogamous and Charlie curated a soundtrack with a few of Stereogamous’ own sublime retouches of classic queer bangers and disco chanteuses for the show.

Coogee Sparkles NYE 2022

Randwick City Council hosted the annual Coogee Sparkles NYE fireworks which is a 20-minute fireworks display around spectacular Coogee beach. Charlie was asked to produce an accompanying 20 minute DJ mix that was played with the fireworks display. Given a family-friendly brief, Charlie put together a cracking (pun intended) mix of pop, dance and disco bangers (with drops and builds to accompany the fireworks) for the whole family to enjoy.
