Alyssa + Ace’s Wedding

An Hour of (Love) Power

Meet Alyssa and Ace, a couple of sweethearts whose wedding I dj’d at December last year at the gorgeous Hopewood House in Bowral. She’s a film director, he’s a dentist, they’re both huge music lovers. They love R&B and house, late 90’s and early 00’s and cited Brandy, P.Diddy, Notorious B.I.G., A Tribe Called Quest through to Flume and Caribou as some of their faves. It’s always fun (at times challenging) to navigate the couples’ tastes, especially when they’re a mixed bag, as Ace mentioned he also loved bands like Hot Chip, LCD Soundsystem, Talking Heads. So indeed, the challenge was how to merge these styles and pick out the best that will translate onto the DF! Their first dance was to Stephanie Mills’ late 70s disco classic ‘Never Knew Love Like This Before’ (SWOON. This is one of my fave tracks ever) As speeches ran longer than expected, I was left with getting these folks to dance for a shorter power set (eep) A recipe for a great party of course not only needs a DJ who can read and respond to a crowd, but what makes it is the crowd itself and what a fun (and good looking) crowd this was! One of the tracks that I recall people losing their s**t to was Plump DJ’s mix of Galaxy 2000 (remix of War’s ‘Galaxy’) which was one of Ace’s requests (Will this signal the come back of breakbeat?)  It was plain to see that it was his and his mates’ anthem. Love these moments on the DF. Towards the end, Alyssa and Ace ended up on their friends’ shoulders as Toto’s Africa rang through the night.

Push the Button (disclaimer: this is not named after the Sugababes song) has been whipped up by Charlie Villas, a Sydney-based DJ and music curator. It  contains reflections on her three fave things in life – music, pop culture, and style, and weaves connections amongst these along the way.
